Thank You SHAREFEST and Journey of Faith Church!
On Saturday, April 30th at our SHAREFEST Workday 150 volunteers worked together to create a beautiful school entrance, planted flowers in our new butterfly and hummingbird garden, painted a colorful mural on the Kindergarten wall, painted the Kindergarten shed, painted our Explorer Logo on the blacktop, and created a Dr. Seuss themed Reading Room. Thank you to Mary Laster for writing the proposal, Lindsay Smith for creating a partnership with Journey of Faith Church, Fred Naile and the RBUSD M &O team for prepping our school for the workday, and most of all THANK YOU to the countless volunteers from Journey of Faith Church and Washington Elementary who worked 14 hours on Saturday to help make our Explorer dreams come true!!!

2015 California Honor Roll Award
Our school was chosen by Educational Results Partnership (ERP) and the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE) as a 2015 California Honor Roll recipient! The California Honor Roll is part of a national effort known for its extensive and rigorous analysis of student achievement in public schools. Our school stood above other schools in the state because of our success in getting students to higher levels of achievement and beyond. The 2015 Honor Roll includes public K-8 and high schools that are recognized for demonstrating consistently high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement over time, and reduction in achievement gaps.
The Honor Roll:
We did not apply for this award (they found us!) and it is a great honor to have been chosen. We will be featured on the Honor Roll website and a banner has been designed for us to hang proudly at our school. Thanks to the hard work of the students and teachers here at Washington, we are being recognized for our achievement. This is a testament to the relentless focus on results that our school has shown over the years and to the hard work of our entire school community.
From all of us here at Washington, I give heartfelt congratulations. Together, we are improving education for all students by sharing our success. Way to go, Explorers!
Washington Elementary has been recognized as a Green Ribbon School Silver Level by the State of California
Our work to decrease the environmental impact and teach students health, wellness, environmental awareness helped our school receive this award. This is a great honor for Washington, being one of four public elementary schools in the state to achieve recognition.
A special congratulations to our PTA, Garden docents, and our student leadership “Green Team” for continuing to promote green efforts campus wide. Another HUGE congratulations to our custodial staff and M&O team for making Redondo such a beautiful place to work! Finally, thank you to our awesome Washington Staff for holding a high bar for wellness among our students and school community.
Here are the Pillars of the Green Ribbon Award:
Green Ribbon Schools demonstrate exemplary achievement in three “pillars.”
· Pillar I: reduce environmental impact and costs;
· Pillar II: improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and
· Pillar III: provide effective environmental education that teaches many disciplines and is especially good at effectively incorporating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, civic skills, and green career pathways.
Thank you to our entire school community for continuing our efforts to GO GREEN !

Important Changes to Immunization Requirements
Notice to Parents and Guardians about Vaccine Exemptions
RE: New immunization requirements for 2016
Under a new law known as SB 277, beginning January 1, 2016 exemptions based on personal beliefs will no longer be an option for the vaccines that are currently required for entry into child care or school in California. Most families will not be affected by the new law because their children have received all required vaccinations. Personal beliefs exemptions on file for a child already attending child care or school will remain valid until the child reaches the next immunization checkpoint at kindergarten (including transitional kindergarten) or 7th grade.
It is important to understand that transitional kindergarten is considered to be kindergarten for the purposes of immunization requirements. Therefore, the required vaccinations for a kindergarten student are also required for the transitional kindergarten student. For more information about SB 277, please see the Frequently Asked Questions available at: http://www.shotsforschool.org/laws/sb277faq/. For more information about school immunization requirements and resources, please visit the California Department of Public Health’s website at www.shotsforschool.org, or contact your local health department or county office of education.
Thank you for helping us to keep our children and community healthy.
